Which manual revision did your AI answer use?

Ben Foden

Verify an AI answer only after you confirm the exact manual revision and your organization's approval.

Record the exact revision behind each claim. Revisions in the same manual family can use different wording, and a citation to the family alone can hide a source conflict.

Keep the check narrow. Tie one answer to one asset or model. Compare the exact supporting text in each revision. Then verify which revision your organization approved. If you cannot find that authority, record "revision conflict unresolved."

What exactly did the answer claim?

Copy the smallest exact claim you can check. Do not paraphrase it. Keep every model number, unit, condition, and qualifier from the answer.

This focus prevents the review from becoming a general comparison of two manuals. Unrelated changes should not distract you from the text that supports the answer.

Start your record with four items:

  • the exact claim from the AI answer
  • the asset or model identifier
  • the base manual number
  • the revision that the answer claims to use

Are the files part of the same document family?

Confirm that the files share a base manual number and a product or model identifier. Then check your organization's approval record and the exact asset scope.

One Graco file identifies itself as manual 3A4476C, Revision C, dated October 2017.[1]

Another identifies itself as manual 3A4476H, Revision H, dated May 2024.[2]

Both list model 17M363 as Ultra 120V.[1][2]

Capture each file independently. For each revision, record its full ID, printed date, product or model identifier, printed page, section heading, exact supporting text, public URL, and access date. Do not copy a page number or heading from one file into the other, even if they appear to match.

Where do the revisions disagree?

Record the smallest exact wording difference. Do not summarize every change between the files.

In both Graco PDFs, the relevant text appears under "Battery and Charger Compatibility Hazard" on printed page 6.[1][2]

Revision C says, "Only use DEWALT brand 20V Max batteries and battery chargers with this tool."[1]

Revision H says, "Only use DEWALT brand 18V Max or 20V Max batteries and battery chargers with this tool."[2]

The literal conflict is precise: "20V Max" in Revision C versus "18V Max or 20V Max" in Revision H. These two official files disagree on the voltage-family wording.[1][2]

A revision comparison highlights the instruction that changed between two manual pages.

This comparison shows the instruction wording changed. Check the organization's approval and asset record to determine which instruction governs a particular unit. The cause of the change, voltage-family equivalence, and retroactive application need separate evidence.

An answer tied only to a manual family can therefore remain unverified. Battery, charger, process, and safety recommendations are outside the scope of this source comparison.

What to record for the comparison

Use one short record so another reviewer can reproduce the comparison.

Record fieldRequired record
Exact claimThe exact claim copied from the AI answer
Asset or modelThe exact identified asset or model used for this check
Document familyThe base manual number shared by the files
Revision C evidenceFull ID, date, product or model identifier, printed page, section, exact text, public URL, and access date
Revision H evidenceFull ID, date, product or model identifier, printed page, section, exact text, public URL, and access date
Literal conflictThe smallest wording difference, with no explanation of intent
Authority evidenceThe organization's record of the approved revision for the identified asset or model
DispositionResolved, not applicable to exact asset, or revision conflict unresolved

The record keeps two questions separate:

  1. What does each source say?
  2. Which source has authority for this use?

Use "not applicable to exact asset" only when the authority evidence establishes that result. If approval or asset scope is missing, use "revision conflict unresolved."

Does the public-current file have authority?

A current download from the manufacturer shows which revision the manufacturer currently makes public.

Graco's Handheld Manuals page says, "Download the most up-to-date version of this manual in your preferred language" and links English manual 3A4476 through the resolver.[3] The resolver returned the 3A4476H document on September 5, 2026.[4]

Together, these sources establish one limited conclusion: Revision H was the current public Graco download at the time of access.[3][4] Direct supersession of Revision C, approval for a reader's organization, and applicability to a specific unit require separate evidence.

The approved revision is checked against the exact unit in the team's authority record.

When must the review stop?

Stop when you cannot verify the organization's approved revision for the exact asset or model.

If the relevant approval record is absent, write "revision conflict unresolved" and withhold any answer that someone would act on.

This comparison uses public documents to show how to verify a revision conflict.

Before you decide on a paid beta, test one recurring revision lookup against your current method. Evaluate whether the tested method identifies the exact approved revision, shows the exact supporting text, stops when authority is unresolved, and reduces review work enough to justify a paid beta.
